Agnostic Bible Study: Mission & Vision
Mission:
The Agnostic Bible Study (ABS) exists to help curious readers understand the role the Bible plays in shaping culture, language, literature, media, and politics. Spearheaded by volunteers, the ABS invites participants to approach the Bible not only as a moral guide, but as a key text in understanding the modern world.
Vision:
The Agnostic Bible Study will approach the Bible from an agnostic perspective, detached from both religion and irreligion. This means that study sessions will:
Discuss theological approaches to the text without making ecclesiastical or moral claims about the Bible, Christianity, or Jesus.
Cover topics ranging from Biblical construction, interpretations of the text, formation of Christianity, and more in an accessible manner for religious, non-religious, questioning, or simply curious readers.
Hold space for diverse ideas regarding the Bible and Christianity.
Acknowledge that religious trauma and abuse are real.

What brought you to ABS? “I wanted to cultivate a space where people are able to bring questions, check assumptions, and learn about how the Bible was created. I want ABS to be a space where people of religious and non-religious backgrounds can learn and deepen their understanding.”

What brought you to ABS? “Curiosity is what brought me to ABS. My late father always taught us to be curious about things we believe in and those we don’t. I try to honor him by applying this as often as possible.”

What brought you to ABS? “I think that religious literacy is important, yet it can be difficult to develop outside of traditional religious institutions. Agnostic Bible Study provides a space for curious individuals to explore questions about religion and scripture, even if they do not identify as religious.”
Caitlin | She/her/hers
What brought you to ABS? “I have had a lifelong interest in the Bible, Christianity, and the role of religion in American society. In my younger years, this interest was spiritual; now, as an academic studying evangelical content creators, I approach these questions as a curious citizen and scholar. I am excited to be a part of ABS to refresh my own understanding of the Bible and to get to know other folks with diverse perspectives on its role in their lives!”

What brought you to ABS? “I wanted to have discussions and tease out through lines of our lives and the bible without the added pretense of religion. I want to be the change I want to see and want to do it with other awesome folks.”

What brought you to ABS? “Raised religious and having found my peace in Agnosticism, I joined ABS to learn about the Bible and the history of Christianity through a different lens than the first time around.”

What brought you to ABS? “I no longer see myself as a believer, but the Bible is SO interesting to me still. I used to know facts, stories, names - everything, but I realized that leaving the church also made my memory for scripture worse. I want to know the stories again, so what better way than to read it with a brand new lens? I'm looking forward to doing close reads of passages the same way I might approach Shakespeare and see what I get out of it.”
